Supercomputers are everywhere and often the smallest most ubiquitous computers are also the most amazing and powerful. The Nvidia AI car - just showcased at CES 2017 - has 2 discrete processors and 2 discrete GPU’s delivering 24 trillion operations per second drawing just 30 watts with 8 high-end CPU cores with 512 next generation GPI chips inside not even imaginable just ten years ago.Ĭameras, cars, phones, drones and even earpods all have domain specific, vertical applications running on them, collecting, processing and storing real time data. A self-driving car in turn will have many hundreds of CPUs.
Even a normal car - not a self-driving car - has a local network connecting over 100 CPUs. More amazing, a car is a mobile phone on wheels a drone is a mobile phone with wings. Today a mobile phone is literally a super computer. The new NVIDIA chips in cars and the Qualcomm chips in drones completely change how we view “devices” and “gadgets”. if we care about the value of individuality and humanity.Ĭomputing Storage, Processing Power and Moore’s Law That is what this paper is all about: a societal change, a cultural change, a technical change, and most of all an imperative change. And, as that happens, we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to have that change lead away from centralization and de-humanization to the world we all really want. Next we are about to see trillions of even more powerful devices become central to all of our lives. Already we have seen the shift from thousands of mainframes to millions of PC’s to billions of phones. Now, though, the largest change of all is in the process of happening. Apple, Amazon and Facebook are all strong instruments of centralized control and pervasive reach. Google knows more about billions of individuals than most governments. Ironically, as computers have grown smaller, far more ubiquitous, and unimaginably powerful, centralized control has only become more of an issue.

More recently for two decades people had the same fear about Microsoft and its apparent control over the PC world. At one time people worried about the dominance of IBM and the ways in which mainframes amplified a world of centralized control. Several times in that period revolutionaries have hoped that the “next computer revolution” - terminals, minicomputers, PC’s, the Internet, phones - would result in a less centralized, more democratized world. Today we are in the process of completing a toolset and platform called Mylio which is the first step in this direction.Ĭomputers have been around for over 60 years. We are planning to build a broad framework and platform called Gaia to enable and empower this profound shift. The end result will be a Copernican revolution shifting away from a centralized economy to an artisanal world where invidual creativity, personal connections, and human scale sharing become the central values. In the next twenty years computers, mostly in the form of personal devices, will change society, culture and our lives.
